Two months later, nothing much had happened for Young and Palmer. They were the new guys in town, and one of them, the one that sang, sounded a little like a dying cat onstage. It was kind of hard to get gigs or pull together a band. Still, they were in California, the land of the golden dream. “We had made it to the Pacific Ocean and California, home of the West Coast Sound,” Young recalled. “This is where the Beach Boys had come from, the Byrds, the Mamas and the Papas, and so many others. We had made it.”

All the while, Young was looking for Stephen Stills. He felt that he was destined to work with Stills. He scouted the bars for him, planning to suggest they start a band.

In the meantime, Stills had made it to L.A. and found it rough going. He’d made a few friends, such as Dickie Davis, stage manager of the Troubadour. Davis not only gave Stills a slot on the Monday open mic night at the celebrated club but also put him up and kept him in SpaghettiOs. He also introduced him to Barry Friedman, who saw Stills as the starter kit for a rock ’n’ roll band he could manage.
